In line with its commitment to harnessing the potential of the blue economy, the Akwa Ibom State government has recently entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Navy Holdings Ltd, a subsidiary of the Nigerian Navy (NN), for the Ibom Fish City Project.
During a brief ceremony at Government House, Uyo, Governor Pastor Umo Eno emphasized that the MOU aims to strengthen the existing partnership between the two entities and signal their readiness to engage in business ventures together.
Governor Eno highlighted the project's origins, tracing back to discussions initiated during his tenure as Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources under the previous administration, and expressed gratitude to the management of Naval Holdings Ltd for their enduring commitment. Governor Eno underscored the significance of the project, noting its potential to create employment opportunities and enhance maritime security in the region.
He emphasized the government's dual focus on economic development and security, particularly in the context of the ARISE Agenda's objectives to explore the blue economy. The governor expressed confidence in the success of the partnership and envisioned it as a model for other coastal states to emulate. Rear Admiral Hamza Kaoje, the Group Managing Director of Navy Holdings Ltd, lauded Governor Eno's dedication to the state's progress and praised his efforts in facilitating the partnership through the MOU.
He assured that the collaboration would significantly benefit Akwa Ibom State. Rear Admiral Ayo Olugbode, the Hydrographer of the Nigerian Navy, provided insights into the project's scope and potential impact. He projected substantial revenue generation and employment opportunities over a five-year period upon completion of the project. Olugbode emphasized the project's alignment with broader regional strategies aimed at addressing maritime challenges and promoting socio-economic development along the West African coastline.
The choice of Akwa Ibom State as the project's location was attributed to its abundant riverine and coastal resources, particularly its fisheries. Olugbode reiterated the project's commitment to adding value to the state's economy. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, Secretary to the State Government Prince Enobong Uwah, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Mr. Uko Udom, Commissioner for Agriculture Dr. Offiong Offor, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Mr. Monday Uko, Managing Director of AKICORP Pastor ImoAbasi Jacob, among others
